HCG Diet: Common Questions

HCG FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) With Professional Answers

What is HCG?
Human Chorionic Gonadotropin, HCG for short. HCG is a hormone present in both men and women, but mostly produced in great amounts in the female placenta during a normal pregnancy. Originally it was used in it’s natural form (extracted from pregnant womens urine) but today modern HCG drops are synthetically made, thus eliminating the need to extract from urine, and also eliminating the hormone imbalances that followed an HCG diet protocol.

How do I use HCG EZ Drops?
Take HCG EZ Drops twice a day. Put 20 drops under the tongue 15-30 minutes before breakfast, then 15-30 minutes before lunch. Hold the drops under your tongue for 1-2 minutes before swallowing. If you miss taking the drops before one of these meals, don’t worry, just take them when you can, making sure you get 40 drops per day. See this video for more details on using HCG EZ Drops:

Are there any side effects with using HCG drops?
There are no side effects associated with real HCG drops. Very few experience slight headaches or dizziness for the first few days but this is extremely rare and mild. This diet method has been used for weight loss for 50+ years, and improved greatly in about the last 5 years or so, eliminating most of the negatives that used to be associated with this protocol.

How can I only survive on 500 calories a day?
You don’t. We DO NOT recommend a 500 calorie diet. Dr. Simeons, the founder of this diet, correctly noted that during a VLCD (very low calorie diet) along with a supplement like HCG injections or drops, that the rapid fat burn would provide enough calories to keep a persons energy up. Fair enough, as one pound of fat can create 1500-2000 calories as it burns… but the 500 calorie diet doesn’t provide enough protein to sustain muscle mass. That’s why we provide all of our purchasers with an 800 and 1200 calorie diet that provides all the nutrition and protein a body needs.

How much weight can I expect to lose using HCG?

Weight loss varies between .5 pound and 3 pounds per day, with the average loss being 1-2 pounds per day.

How many HCG drops should I take?

20 drops under your tongue in the morning, then again in the afternoon.  Hold for 1-2 minutes.  Nothing to eat or drink for 15-30 minutes before or after taking the drops.

The easiest way to do this is to count the drops out onto a spoon.

So, a total of 40 drops per day.

Do HCG drops need to be refrigerated?

No, it is not necessary for the HCG EZ drops to be refrigerated.  You may keep them in your purse, briefcase, at home or at your desk.  It is recommended that you keep them out of direct sunlight or out of a hot car.

What do I do if I reach a plateau with my weight loss during the HCG Drops?

If you have not been taking HCG for more than 42 days you will break the plateau by doing an apple day. Eat six apples throughout the day, resume the HCG diet requirements the following day. If you still are not losing weight than you have become immune to HCG drops and need to go to the next phase of the diet.

What can I do to ensure that I lose a pound a day or more while taking HCG?

  • Required – Water intake is vital for the HCG drops diet, drink more than 2 liters of water per day
  • Complete a colon cleansing diet before you start using HCG.
  • Getting 30 grams of fiber per day (fiber pills or powders), the fiber can reduce constipation associated with little food intake.
  • Drink teas without sugars while on the HCG drops.
  • Take a multi- vitamin, and vitamin B-12 sublingual to boost your energy and metabolism.
  • Eat salad with all meals.
  • Light exercise for 15 minutes a day will increase your metabolism.
  • Do not eat genetically modified foods or foods with high fructose corn syrups.
  • Avoid artificial sweeteners.
  • Avoid Fast Food Restaurants

What do I do if I have constipation?

Constipation is often encountered when you have less food intake. One you can add fiber by taking fiber additives. Increase your fluid intake, drink more water. Herbal teas: Dieters Tea, Smooth tea. Steep these teas for a short time because they can cause cramping. Licorice tea can also be beneficial; you may also try Cascara Sagrada. This is also an herbal supplement that acts as a natural laxative.

What do I do when I have my period?

On the first day of your period, you stop the HCG drops. You will continue the 800 or 1200 cal/day diet. When your period is almost over and you are just spotting, you may restart the HCG drops. The HCG drops that you missed during this time will be added to the end of the program so that you get the full 23 or 40. Yes, this will extend your program.

Do I need to exercise?

No, it is not necessary to exercise while on the HCG drops plan.  You do need to follow a strict low calorie (800 or 1200) diet and drink a lot of water.

Can I drink any alcohol while on the HCG diet?

Well, you really shouldn’t. During the weight loss phase of the HCG diet, try to avoid alcohol as much as possible. But if you just have to have a drink at that party or celebration, make it lite, and don’t drink too much, then get back on the band-wagon and be as strict as possible until you hit your weight goal!

I love working out, not intensely so I still have those bulges in some areas that I wanted to get rid off. I don’t want to discontinue my workout routine which consist mostly of zumba dances and sometimes some planking. Can I continue doing that while doing the hcg diet? I do hope so. :-)

You will have to do light exercises as much as possible Cynthia. If not, and you have to to strenuous exercises then eat your fruits before working out. It doesn’t matter how much. That should sustain you. But if you can skip it for the time being, then do so. Only for a couple of weeks anyway. Do keep us posted Cynthia. Thanks.

Hi Lisa, colon cleansing before doing the hcg diet is an option a dieter may choose to do. It’s not in the original protocol because back then colon cleansing is not as popular as it is now. But doing cleansing before a special diet believed to aide in weight loss because it eliminate toxins, and toxins is known to contribute in fat storage. But for it’s overall health benefits, whether or not you are doing hcg diet, I think it’s a good practice every once in a while. Not everyday, but once in a while. Typically it’s done once or twice a year depending on your doctor’s recommendation. Hope this helps LisaM.

Please clarify, you mentioned here “If you have not been taking HCG for more than 42 days”, then I can do apple day to break the plateau right? What if I experienced plateau while taking the drops, what should I do then? Can I not do the apple day or steak day as what I can remember it’s called?

Hi Mary, actually the apple and steak day are designed when you hit plateau during stabilization phase. When you plateau, gain, stalled during the low calorie phase, you don’t typically do these 2. Rather, you see what caused the plateau. If you cheated a little, then correct that one and promise to never cheat again. If it’s your TOM – or time of the month then that a gain or 2 is normal. You just continue being POP – perfect on protocol and drink more water and it will correct itself in no time. If you eat less than 800 calories, then increase calories. Those are the possible scenarios as to why you prolly gained. Hope this info helps.

I find it really ironic to do colon cleansing before the diet and then when you start the diet you eat fatty, unhealthy stuff. What’s the logic there? Sorry, I just don’t get it.

Some people do colon cleansing to get rid of the accumulated toxins prior to their hcg diet. This way, your body will be able absorb and fully gain the benefits of the hcg drops. The 2 loading days, though Dr. Simeons originally recommended fatty foods, will be cleansed during the low calorie phase. And the purpose of Phase 1 is to prep your body from the low calorie diet you are about to embark in for a couple of weeks. Some did not feel hungry at all during the low calorie phase and attributed it to the loading they did. While others experience differently. But now we suggest our customers to do healthy loading and concentrate on healthy fats instead. (e.g. avocado, nuts, etc.)

I am confused here too. When you have not been taking hcg drops for more than 42 days? That’s quite a long time which means you are probably on Phase4 already right? So while trying to maintain your weight after the drops and you see a gain or stall you do the apple or steak day, is that right? Let me know. Thank.s

A friend of mine who did this diet continued drinking her regular dose of wine while doing this diet. She said she still lost like 10 lbs. But I think she could have lost more if she followed the plan as is written on the pamphlet.

And you are right SheriT. She could have lost more if she didn’t. Wine will basically turn into sugar once it’s ingested. And you know it, sugar is a No No on Phase 2. Hope next round would be a no-alcohol round for her so she will see the real results when she’s following the protocol to the T.

I have a friend who took alcohol and never lost a pound. I guess to each his own? Perhaps a sip or a glass a week wont hurt? Or only in important events that you know there’s no way for yoy not to drink alcohol. You just have to face the consequence.

Yes Caroline, to each his own. How the alcohol may react to a person who’s doing the hcg diet really differs. If they are willing to try then they may, at their own risk.

You have q&a for constipation, how about diarrhea? My first time on this diet I had diarrhea for a week. It improved after. My questions will that happen again? and if it does what is your remedy that will not jeopardize my weight loss? Thanks.

      April 2, 2015 @ 6:04 pm

Hi Jhonny, the reason for the diarrhea is because your body is detoxing. You must have had plenty of carbs and sugar prior to hcg diet. Yeast feed on these, and so if you are detoxing from eating clean (no carbs and sugar on P2 right?) then your healing your gut and body in general. This should be a good thing. The remedy for diarrhea whatever the cause may be is first to drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration. Now, if your diarrhea last another week or more then go and consult with your doctor. You are better safe than sorry. Hope you keep us posted. :-)

I had wine while on the diet but I still lost 30 pounds. I say, if it will not bother your weight loss, then take just a few sip if you had no choice. Like I had no choice when I went to my sister’s wedding. I gave my wishes and offered a toast. No choice I tell ya. Just sayin’. :-)

Thanks for sharing your experience Clau. It really only goes to show that results vary from person to person. If a person is willing to risk to know how it will react to them, then they are free to do so. Again at their own risk. :-)

I thought that side effect is hormonal imbalance? And also I had breakouts while on this diet for a week so I had to stop cause it’s really frustrating but I lost 7 pounds in that one week. Why is that? Does anyone else experience breakouts while on the drops? I wanted to do this diet again but I fear the breakout effects. I hate having those pimples.

Hi Stacey! The breakouts is due mainly to the detoxification happening inside your body as you lose fat and burn it into usable energy. That is quite normal and occurs to some people, but not all. People experience different side effects as they detox while doing the hcg diet. Others experience migraine or diarrhea. When that happens again, just drink more water, spot treatment it or don’t do anything at all. It will clear on it’s own if the reason behind it is due to the detox effect of the hcg diet. Hope this encourages you to try hcg diet again since you had a great weight loss start.

I think I have been doing this diet the wrong way during Time of the Month. I stop taking the drops, continue the diet, then pick up where I left off, but not adding those missed days. Hmmm, maybe I would’ve lost more if this is what I did. Where were you when I needed this info? :-(

Maria, no regrets, just lessons learned. Next time around, you are know what to do. Again, during TOM’s heavy days, you stop taking the drops but continue the low calorie plan. When you noticed it’s no longer heavy but you’re seeing tiny drops then resume taking the drops. If you skipped the drops for 3 days, then you will have to add another 3 days in your target date (23rd or 40th day). Let me know if this isn’t clear to you yet.

They charged me twice for one order, their website closed while I was in the middle, when I logged back, it let me start over, so assumed the order didn’t go through, when I looked at my statement that night, it showed 2 transactions. I only ordered once, why would anyone order twice for a product that they didn’t try at first. I emailed them no response, call them and was promised a refund, 2 days later still no refund,.

Here is the transaction no. 7082327276. Also, the duplicate order was sent out yesterday. When you called our customer support regarding this, the USPS people picked up the packages and so the other set of package was included in the shipment. Once both packages arrives just refuse the other one so that you don’t have to pay for the shipping. Again, please accept our apologies for any inconvenience caused.

So once you are immune to the drops and even if you are not yet with the duration you planned to be on it, and even if you haven;t reached your weight loss goal I will have to go to Phase 3 is that right? That’s how I understood your statement about plateau.

Yes, once you get immune from the drops it is just wise to stop and go to the next stage because it will not be effective on you. Just wait for the drops to be out of your system for a couple of weeks before you start again. So yes, switch to Phase 3 but don’t forget that you still have to do the 3 days low calorie diet before you start Phase 3.

However, if you are under medication and are carefully monitored by your doctor, I suggest that you heed their advice before you start taking the drops and doing the hcg diet plan.
